Hs-03 Desk Lamp Turns Heat Management Into Design
In lighting design, heat is a problem that usually needs to disappear. Industrial designer Amir Shaham takes a different approach with the HS-03 Desk Lamp, turning thermal management into one of the object’s most recognizable features.
At the center of the HS-03 is a triple-heatsink head. Heatsinks work by pulling excess heat away from a source and dispersing it through a larger surface area, helping components maintain a stable temperature. Here, the solution isn’t tucked somewhere inside the lamp. Three prominent aluminum fins surround the light source, giving the HS-03 its mechanical, almost engineered silhouette.
It’s an approach that reflects the object as a whole. Rather than separating function from appearance, Shaham allows the lamp’s construction to determine its visual identity.
The HS-03 is crafted primarily from anodized aluminum, a material often associated with electronics, machinery and industrial equipment. Custom frosted resin elements soften that language, diffusing the light and bringing a more tactile quality to the otherwise precise metal construction.
Then there’s the cord. Bright lime green and deliberately difficult to ignore, it introduces a playful interruption to the lamp’s restrained metallic palette. Instead of treating the power cable as something to conceal, it becomes another visible component of the object.
The same thinking extends to its base. Rather than occupying additional desk space with a conventional stand, the HS-03 is anchored by a solid machined clamp, attaching directly to the edge of a work surface.
There’s something refreshingly straightforward about the result. Every component appears to have a job, but none of them are denied the opportunity to contribute visually. The heatsink manages temperature. The clamp supports the lamp. The cable supplies power. Together, those necessities become its character.
With the HS-03, Shaham makes a case for leaving the mechanics visible. Sometimes the most interesting part of an object is simply seeing how it works.
